It begins more like a sermon than a pop concert. Through billowing dry ice, at the back of the dimly lit stage, a line of barely visible figures emerge, dressed in black and white nun-like garb. Breaking the silence is the opening track from A Complicated Woman – Self Esteem’s bold third album, which landed her a No.5 chart placing in May.
Entitled I Do And I Don’t Care, it builds from a congregational choral swell into a stark, conversational monologue before the rising voices return and gather for the powerful refrain: “If I’m so empowered, why am I such a coward?”
