While Scandinavia specifically denotes Sweden, Denmark and Norway, the term is often used synonymously to represent the wider ‘Nordic’ region, encompassing Iceland, Finland, and the island of Greenland, which are said to share a broader cultural character.
Iceland boasts a rich musical heritage. Arguably the country’s most famous daughter is the inimitable Björk, who first came to people’s attention fronting indie stalwarts the Sugarcubes (pictured below). Creating hauntingly ethereal and widescreen anthems, indie stars Sigur Rós are every budding filmmaker’s go-to music for any scene that requires a mood labelled “epic and grandiose”. They are also one of only a few Nordic acts to enjoy wider success without singing in English.
