“Nothing is more beautiful tha a guitar,” Chopin once said, “except maybe two.” He’d have liked Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero. They started out in Mexico City as metal fans, and ever since their 2006 self-titled album the Grammy winners have created their own unique niche, blending flamenco, rock and, later, prog. Their intense guitar duets have been leaving audiences agog ever since. Together they’ve brought new dimensions to Stairway To Heaven, Metallica’s Orion and even Pink Floyd’s 20-minute epic Echoes. Incredible speed, tone, articulation and artistic telepathy are here in abundance, with that irresistible hand-againstwood flamenco percussive element adding to their wonderfully exciting dynamics. This is mainly acoustic goodness with barely a fuzz box in sight but, as Quintero told us recently: “We get everyone from punks to metal guys to grannies enjoying what we do, and we embrace that.”
