My Christmas gift is faulty
Q I shooting equipment from an uncle received some nice bits of at Christmas, but unfortunately one of the items is defective. My uncle is one of those people who plans well in advance and the receipt shows it was purchased last August. Can I still return it after all this time?
A
Your uncle isn’t alone in his careful
planning
ahead and I suspect
that many people did their Christmas shopping well in advance during the recent lockdown periods.
The first thing to check is whether or not the product is covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, as that would be the most straightforward route to resolve your problem.
What are your legal rights if a gift turns out to be faulty?

Strictly speaking you are beyond the 30-day right to reject the goods, so your only remedy will be to seek a repair or replacement, at the discretion of the retailer. That said, a kindly retailer will often be sympathetic to a return of a product provided you have a receipt and the original packaging, and there is no sign that the product was damaged in some way after it was purchased.
