❯ Though it’s a term that originated in reference to those juggernaut electronic musicians who took the charts by storm in the mid-90s, electronica is a term now more associated with those creating lush and mesmerising sounds that take the listener somewhere else (see also ‘intelligent dance music’, or IDM). Though the electronica-maker’s toolkit is similar to that of EDM, often elements of sound design and more conventional song-arranging apply in lieu of grooves or rhythms. With these requirements in mind, then, we’ve cherry-picked some more freeware tools that could be put to very good use when forging your next downtempo, cerebral masterpiece.
