Sugar Bytes Effectrix 2 €129
16 years after the release of the original, Sugar Bytes has finally updated this multi-effect sequencer but, asks Andy Jones, is v2 worth the wait?
We’ve seen some very old software get updated recently, but this might well be the longest wait between versions that we’ve seen; the original Effectrix came out some 15 years ago. The concept was very innovative at the time: a bank of 14 effects within their own sequencer environment which you could sync to your DAW for glitchy, experimental fun. But is there still room for it in 2024?
On the face of it, version 2 hasn’t really moved on that much over those 14 years, but dig a little deeper and you’ll see some bigger changes. The UI for the 32-step sequencer has been redesigned but is still simple to use. You simply choose which effect you want and then draw and drag where you want it to take place. You can divide the steps in the grid from half note to 32nd with triplet options new to v2. You can also now change the order of the effects, something we asked for in version one, so that was worth the wait.
