JULY 24

ELMBRIDGE 10km, Surrey

FOR the second time in just over a week it was a Wicks family double, Martin Duff reports.

After their repeat wins in the Standard Chartered Great City 5km, Phil had an easy men’s race victory, but Emily again had a fight with Steph McCall.

Phil’s 30:38 was a record for the revised course in this, the third running on the out-and-back towpath. The event is classed as multi-terrain, but the underfoot state of the going is good.

Wicks had opened up a 200m lead by the 3km marker and on the return journey at the same point the margin was two minutes with just 3km back along the towpath left to run. He said: “I went off hard to target the course record but overcooked it in the first half. I went through 5km in 15 minutes dead, then I just tried to keep a pace going, as I was running on my own.”

In the Great City Race, Emily Wicks’ margin of victory over McCall was just a second and here over the double distance it was two seconds.

McCall led through 5km before Wicks tried to pull away and just about took the victory in 35:05 as McCall pressed hard all the way. Georgie Bruinvels kept the pair in sight for most of the way before placing third with 35:32.

Overall: 1 P Wicks (Belg) 30:38; 2 J Croft (S Lon) 33:04; 3 G Upton (Belg) 33:23; 4 J Williams (Wimb W) 33:41; 5 A Brooker (Lon Hth) 33:53; 6 T Higgs (S Lon, U20) 33:54; 7 R McDowell (HW, M35) 33:57; 8 O Garrod (E&E) 34:14; 9 C Kissane-Wood (TVH) 34:23; 10 M Graham (Reig, M35) 34:33; 11 S Blake (Woking) 34:38; 12 O Laws (NEB, M35) 34:43; 13 J English (Croy) 34:51; 14 C High (G&G) 34:53; 15 A Moses (Reig, M35) 34:54; 16 C Compton (Kent, M40) 34:56; 17 D Lipscomb (Unatt) 34:56
