WORDS: SIMON BUTTON
THERE ARE POP STARS and then there’s Tori Amos: the singersongwriter who doesn’t so much break moulds as refuse to go near them. None of her albums to date sound the same, no two of her live shows stick to the same play list, and The Light Princess — the 2013 National Theatre musical for which she wrote the music and lyrics — was an uncompromisingly feminist fairytale.
Born Myra Ellen Amos, Tori has been doing things her way since winning a scholarship to a prestigious music school at the age of five, only to be expelled for playing by ear rather than learning to read music.
