interesting response from Rosemary Low, who
has also sent an image of the bird (see letter,
this page.) This was new to me, and I’m not
surprised the experts have disagreed about it.
With mystery-bird photos, the first rule is to take great
care when you’re only looking at one image. But it’s hard
not to speculate, isn’t it? The general appearance and
white eye-ring shout “conure”, yet (if Roland Green’s
painting is accurate) the distribution of blue on the flight
feathers and leading coverts doesn’t seem quite to match
Aratinga. I can see why Patagonian conure might be
evoked as a parent, but its contrasting yellow rump is not
represented here. An amusing game for a quiet afternoon,
eh? Parrot fanciers – your contributions are very welcome!
