With the help of Brit writers and producers, Tina Turner staged a remarkable comeback in the 80s, starting with What’s Love Got To Do With It, her US chart-topping single in September 1984. Penned by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle (the latter from Scottish duo Gallagher And Lyle), the song was originally offered to Cliff Richard, who turned it down. Donna Summer dragged her heels over recording it and Bucks Fizz had a pop, too, with Bobby G taking lead vocals. But when Tina got her hands on it, she turned it into her first hit since the early 1970s, eventually rising to the summit for three weeks. Turner was aged 44 when the song reached No.1, at that time, the oldest female solo artist ever to top the charts. Steve Harnell
