Can Cash Converters refuse refund for stolen phone?
Q Last August, I bought an iPhone from the eBay page of Cash Converters.
It worked well until it was blacklisted in early November. Apparently, the phone’s IMEI had been registered as lost or stolen. I paid using PayPal and it won’t give me a refund. Cash Converters and eBay said I was outside their 30-day guarantee period to get my money back. Currently, I’m out of pocket £570, with no one admitting fault. Is there anything I can do?
Lindsay Rice
A Yes, Lindsay should report the sale to Action Fraud (www. actionfraud.police.uk Cash Converters that she’s entitled to a full refund under the Consumer Rights Act. Under the law, Cash Converters shouldn’t be selling any lost or stolen phones, so it is entirely to blame here.
The company’s support team needs a crash course in UK consumer law. It told Lindsay that had she bought the phone in store she’d have been entitled to a refund.
