Go back one hundred years or so a blink of a geological eye and the mountains of France, Italy and Spain were just as they always had been. The impressive but static snow tipped shark’s teeth on the horizon, inhospitable and inaccessible. But over the last century they have become a noisy and colourful gladiatorial arena; the stage for some of the most exciting and monumental battles in cycling. At the heart of these are the duels famous sporting rivalries that are sometimes race-long, sometimes career-long.
