South Sands Hotel: proper Devonshire seclusion
GREATE SCAPES
WORDS: PHOEBE STONE
WHY IT’S GREAT What can be more relaxing than lying in bed listening to the waves lapping on the shore? That’s what you get at South Sands as it’s right on a sandy beach, tucked between hills on the Devon coast.
The wood-clad hotel exudes New England coastal chic and its light, airy restaurant opens onto a fulllength deck, which looks out over the beach. You could easily spend the day alternating between sandy strolls and paddles, and drinks on the terrace while watching the tide turn and the sun set. Inside, wooden floors, dove grey wicker seats and white walls keep things classy but casual. The bar has an excellent cocktail list and gives on to a cosy nook for nightcaps in the colder months – there’s even a fireplace.
