When Jon Brittain’s Rotterdam became the first ever transgender-themed play to win an Olivier Award, Anna Martine Freeman was surprised to say the least.
“I just wasn’t ready. I was like, ‘No, no, this isn’t right – what?’ I think I said ‘what?’ about five times! Someone said ‘shit’ and it echoed around the Royal Albert Hall. We were all so in shock.”
Google the clip of the Rotterdam team being interviewed afterwards and you’ll see euphoric disbelief written all over their gleaming faces. “I’m still like, was it a dream? Did that really happen?” says Anna.
