with Carrie Lyell @Seej

I’ve been writing this column for ive and a half years now, and in that time I can count on one hand the good news stories I’ve written about. Month in, month out, I’m lamenting the way lesbian, bi and queer women’s stories are treated by the mainstream media. That’s when they are covered at all. More often than not, still, we’re wilfully ignored, unless it suits whatever cishet agenda is being pushed that day. That’s one of the reasons DIVA is such an invaluable resource. I know that I’m biased, of course, but it’s so, so important to have spaces to share our experiences. But sadly, the few platforms which do centre queer narratives in all their nuanced glory are struggling to keep their heads aloat in these choppy capitalist waters. You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone and all that. But it’s not all misery, I promise you. In fact, it brings me great personal pleasure to deliver some positive news in the shape of DIVA Box Ofice, the latest addition to the DIVA family and Europe’s irst digital TV channel dedicated to lez/bi content. As well as providing queer women with a space to see themselves relected, DBO gives us an opportunity not only to tell stories with words on a page, but to bring them to life onscreen as well. What a thrilling way to celebrate DIVA’s 25th year. At a time when those aforementioned waters seem rougher than ever, I feel incredibly lucky to be part of something bursting with passion and optimism, and a hope for bigger, better and richer media representation. It’s exciting stuff, so stay tuned. Read more about DIVA Box Ofice and one of its irst offerings on page 54. And head to to see what else we have to offer…
