Ian Gosling was already a BBC employee when, in early 1971, he noticed an internal vacancy for a stores assistant in the Visual Effects Department. He spent the next few years at the department – a time that, almost inevitably, involved working on Doctor Who.
“The chief stores man was an old chap called Bertram Caldicott,” remembers Ian. “I was his assistant, alongside another guy called Ken Greenaway. Our job was to order, stock and supply the visual effects crews with whatever they needed for the job in hand. If we didn’t have what they wanted, Ken and I were sent out to track it down and bring it back.
