Dan Starkey’s Short Trips debut is designed to disorient. “Hopefully the listener is thrown and confused”, says Dan, with a smile. “It starts with a character called Perry – not the Peri we know and love. He’s male, he seems to be a soldier, and he’s tramping through some icy wilderness. It’s all told in the present tense, and there’s this idea of a slightly shifting, rootless consciousness floating around in time. This is interspersed with a much more conventional past-tense narrative, which is a Sixth Doctor and Peri adventure – they find themselves on a spaceport in the future, tracking down some temporal anomalies. It was nice to be able to play with those different tones.
Narrator Nicola Bryant and writer Dan Starkey.
“I was also quite conscious of wanting to evoke things like textures and tastes”, he adds. “I wanted to write something that was much more about the brainwork behind the different times and places that you find yourself in, rather than just ‘he said’, ‘she said’ and ‘he had a big gun’. The value of writing prose is that you can depict interior states of thought. You can tell what a character’s thinking and what they’re feeling a lot more. I had some fun with that.”
