I t’s no surprise that some of Doctor Who’s 1980s directors have enjoyed considerable further success. Weeks after the transmission of his second Doctor Who story, Attack of the Cybermen (1985), Matthew Robinson’s name was on the very first episode of EastEnders. And, in 1998, he became the show’s executive producer, gaining the nickname ‘The Pope of Soap’ from The Sun. Tony Virgo, who directed The King’s Demons (1983), had become EastEnders’ producer in the late 1980s, before assuming similar roles on The Bill and Peak Practice.
