We’re not entirely sure what Cameron Kunzelman is aiming for with his academic study of Assassin’s Creed, and perhaps he isn’t either. In an introduction that wanders like the series itself, he comes closest to a thesis statement when he speaks of analysing his subject in its context as a massive transmedia IP, or examining the ideological implications of the core games’ open-world nature. Yet even by the book’s conclusion, he hasn’t concluded much. What is clear is the vast amount of research Kunzelman has done, which shows in individual case studies – exploring, for example, how feelings of freedom are produced in Black Flag and might mirror the imperial goals of its historical setting. As in the games, keep looking and there’s treasure to be found.
