A VISIT TO ECCO’S BIRTHPLACE IN SOUTHERN DENMARK REVEALS A SHOE BRAND DEFINED BY BOTH INGENUITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP PASSED DOWN THROUGH GENERATIONS
WORDS BY ANGELA LAW
It may be a town of just 7477 people, but the first thing I notice about Tønder isn’t the quiet; it’s the rhythm beneath it. It’s in the sound of footsteps clacking along cobblestone streets and the wind rustling through long grass fields, ponies grazing nearby. And inside a sleek, modern building tucked into the picturesque Danish landscape, the quiet hum of artisans who have shaped leather for generations.
It’s here that I immerse myself in the world of Ecco — a brand whose story begins, and still endures, in this tranquil region, located not far from the German border. In many ways, Ecco feels inseparable from its surroundings. Every person who works in the headquarters has a view of the landscape through floor-toceiling windows, and watching all four seasons roll past throughout the year is intrinsic to the design process.
