HONDA CBR650R

It took all of two seconds to realise that the CBR650R was a wholly different proposition. From its weight to the fiery note booming from its can, I knew in a jiffy that this was set to be a much more lively, exciting and engaging ride. It didn’t just feel and sound more substantial, but looked it too. As similar as the two models are, the spec of the 650 was that bit more beefed up, with a wider 180 profile rear tyre and a larger, sexier swingarm. The engine was even more of a showpiece, with a cutaway in the bodywork to show the four cylinders and sweep of the header pipes that conjoined neatly into the centrally-massed silencer. You could say it looked that bit more finished, mirroring the guise of the Blade at the nose cone, but loosing points at the tail thanks to its stepped single seat. While the CBR500R’s rear harked from the CBR600RR’s angular unit, the 650’s looked more tourer than tantaliser. I guess, when all’s said and done, this bike was launched at a time when the 600RR was still very much alive and kicking, so it needed to pitch to a slightly different audience – akin to how Honda angled the old CBR600F launched back in 2011. Come to think of it, Honda’s done well out of building sporty yet practical sportsbikes throughout the years, with the iconic Steel Frame of the 1990s perhaps nailing that brief best of all. I raced two of them back in the day and, funnily enough, despite the 25 years of development since, they made about the same power (94bhp) as this 650R claims and weighed about the same too (just north of 210kg)… history has a funny habit of repeating itself, don’t you think? That or, more to the point, the bods at Honda realised there was more demand for a torquier, less revvy – albeit less potent – everyday CBR in today’s market… which is how I’d describe this machine. And that’s not a slight, by the way. I get that not everyone wants a fully focused race rep with 20 million revs on tap. Of course, for all I knew, this could have been a race rep in disguise, but that consideration soon lost ground the moment I got its wheels into motion.
