Fly Fishing and Fly Tying  |  November 2025
Welcome to the November 2025 issue of Fly Fishing & Fly Tying!
Neil Patterson describes a tandem with a difference on page 38. This is one for the top dropper of a wet-fly cast. It involves certain tying skills which have been put on the back-burner over the past decade or so but, having seen this wet fly in action on wild fish – and fished in its unusual position on the cast – I can vouch that it’s worth the extra tying time!
Another of this type of fly has made a reappearance on Llyn Trawsfynydd (page 22); the Concoction is an excellent Welsh wet fly pattern that, because it includes a palmer hackle and a rolled hen pheasant wing probably doesn’t get so much air-time (watertime?)
in today’s instant fly world of fritz and tungsten.
However, as Charles Jardine summarises, the Concoction is an immensely satisfying pattern to dress. More importantly, however, it’s a truly deadly pattern to fish, in either a buzzer hatch and a sedge hatch.
A different challenge comes when tying small flies, but with the help of Paul Procter’s “simple small fly rules” (page 40) he can help point you towards success with these tremendously effective, diminutive flies.
It’s time to dust off the vice, and reacquire some of the older skills!
