During the first and second world wars, the Merchant Marine of Great Britain suffered very large casualties from enemy warships, submarines, mines and, in the second world war, aircraft attacks. A walk around burial grounds such as Rosebank cemetery in Edinburgh will show family headstones that may commemorate an individual who served in the merchant marine. For example, for a Nellie McPherson it states: ‘Lost at Sea by German Enemy Action 15 March 1915’, whilst for Robert Wright it states: ‘Lost at Sea April 1945’. Merchant Marine casualties from both wars details can be found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website: www.cwgc.org
