We all know that technology is advancing at an incredible pace. Some view this as rather worrying but, as someone who has lost their eyesight, technology allows me to do things which would have been impossible even twenty years ago, and I wish the advances would come even more quickly than they are.

It is the advent of the smartphone which makes most of these advances possible, so if you know someone who is struggling with their eyesight but who doesn’t know about the various apps that can help them, hopefully this will provide you with a little insight.

Part of the problem I had when my vision deteriorated to such an extent that everyday tasks were becoming almost impossible, was that I had no idea where to turn to for help. There are things that can help, but finding out about them can be tricky. So, in what I hope will be only the first in a series of articles on technology, I’d like to share my thoughts on one app which every visually impaired person should have on their smartphone. First, a disclaimer. I am not a technical expert, so my views are very much those of a user of tech to meet specialist needs. Naturally, most of the things I use are designed for use by people suffering sight loss, but some of the gadgets and apps I use are also suitable for people with mobility issues. And the first app I’d like to tell you about also requires sighted people to use it for it to be effective.
