ON 10 JULY, PUERTO RICO holds its annual celebration day for the piña colada – the pineapple, rum and coconut combo that’s officially recognised as its national drink. The cocktail achieved this status in 1978, and the following year it featured in singer Rupert Holmes’ chart-topping single Escape (The Piña Colada Song) as a symbol of frisky adventure. One survey in 2015 had it topping Britain’s list of best-loved cocktails.
