It’s taken nine years for Greg Gonzalez to deliver his debut album, but the result is dreamy slow-burn perfection. K. is a gorgeous, smokey opener, a tale of blossoming romance that unfurls amid the most evocative, chiming reverb-lashed guitar and gentle punctuation of a ride cymbal. “When you go away, I still see you”, Gonzalez laments on the wistful Sunsetz, with yet another swoonsome riff and wonderfully sleepy bassline. The whole record melts into one immersive, dreamy wash with the influence of Mazzy Star, Canadian dream-poppers Alvvays and fellow Brooklyn band The Antlers hanging in the air. Former cinema manager Gonzalez’s flair for the filmic is present in the lyrics of Flash and Opera House, and he perfectly depicts the melodrama of unfolding love on Apocalypse: “Your lips, my lips, apocalypse”. Deluxe options include a limited-edition picture disc and a bundled T-shirt and silkscreen poster package.
