COMPACT DAB RADIOS
Expand your listening habits with these versatile DAB radios
Despite the omnipresence of internet-connected devices, radio is still very popular with many people, particularly in its more advanced DAB format. This is superior to FM radio in many ways including clearer and stronger signals and being location independent so you’re not restricted to picking up only the stations in your area. Although distinct from smart speakers, many DAB radios do incorporate extra features like internet radio and Spotify connectivity, Bluetooth and line inputs, making them versatile. Some have a battery power option and most can work as alarm clocks. Some are more portable, others are designed to simply sit on a shelf.
What you won’t find are things like microphones for voice commands, Siri or Google Assistant as these are particular to smart speakers. Think of DAB radios as a halfway house between a coventional FM radio and a high-tech smart speaker, with a price that reflects that status. With many major statons broadcasting on DAB, these radios are a great way to listen without the additional cost and perhaps privacy concerns of using full-blown internet speakers.

How we tested
Ease of use when getting set up was the first thing tested, including connecting to Wi-Fi networks where this feature was available. Navigating DAB and other stations, storing presets and interacting using the on-body and remote controls were also tested. Sound quality with various sources was assessed, as was the utility of extra connections like Bluetooth or analogue audio inputs, where featured. Since these are lifestyle radios, their look was also taken into account.
