The more we work from home, the more important email has become to our daily lives. After all, it’s a lot harder to discuss things with your colleagues when you’re no longer in the same room. But email is just as important for your personal life, with birthday wishes, vouchers and coupons, travel plans and so much more emailed over the web.
That means it’s important to have a good email app in place on your Mac. For many people, that might mean Apple’s Mail, and it’s true that it’s come on leaps and bounds since our last email apps group test in MacFormat #MF403. But the world is wide and exciting, and where’s the fun of just sticking to the defaults? So, while we’ll be putting Mail through its paces on these pages, we’ll also be placing five other popular email apps under the microscope to see which comes out on top.
Which will make it into your inbox, and which are headed for the spam folder? Let’s compose this group test, set up our smart folders, and see which app earns a top priority flag.
How we tested
First, we loaded up our chosen apps with existing email accounts from Gmail and Outlook (or, in the case of Proton, set up a new address and created some redirects) to see how well they imported our messages and labels. We then used the apps as we normally would, sending and reading emails and managing newsletters and receipts.
