Key fact
Each version of the Apple Pencil provides different features and is designed to be compatible with different iPad models. You might be able to use one of the older Pencil models with a newer iPad, but you may find that certain features don’t work properly.
Apple provides a comprehensive list on its website that tells you which Pencil works with each type of iPad. Go to support.apple.com/en-gb/108937.
People laughed at the Apple Pencil when it was first launched back in 2015, saying that only Apple could take a simple tool like a pencil and turn it into an overpriced accessory costing £99. In fact, Steve Jobs had always mocked the idea of using a stylus with an iPad or iPhone, arguing that “God gave us 10 styluses” so they didn’t need to invent another one. And critics certainly reminded Apple of Jobs’ words when the Apple Pencil was launched. Even so, the Pencil has proved surprisingly popular over the years, and – like so many other Apple products – it recently got the ‘pro’ treatment with the launch of the new Apple Pencil Pro.
