THEREIS A saying that the arrival of the car freed the horse. That rather than threaten the existence of the all–important horse, the ability of the car to take over so much effort meant that horses got to be for pleasure, and didn’t have to spend their time working. At least, I think there’s a saying about this. I remember a TV presenter saying that it was a saying, but I can’t find any evidence of it. It always stuck with me as an idea: that something that seems to replace something else isn’t necessarily bad for the thing being replaced. Sometimes it’s an opportunity.
