Light of My Life

I’m currently doing a build. Yes, I’m going for components with power I don’t need, but who cares? I’m a retired IT guy, so it’s all fun! So, I appreciate all your info on power, cores, and overclocking. I love it!

That said, what I need is an article on RGB lighting. I’m buying an Asus motherboard that uses the Aura lighting standard, then I’m looking at Corsair fans, which use the iCUE standard. How about an article for builders that talks about the best way to put on a ‘light show’?

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, GUY COCKER, RESPONDS: First of all, congratulations on your build, but you’ve left us all hanging—how did it go? Please send in pictures to show us what it looks like. Second, what a fantastic idea for a feature. I have to admit, the amount of great feature ideas I receive from Maximum PC readers makes my job as editor much easier!

As I sit here looking over my own desktop setup, I have RGB-enabled components from Gigabyte, HyperX, Adata, DEEPCOOL, upHERE, Logitech, and Alienware—seven different companies each with different lighting standards. It can be easier to use one company’s products when trying to sync—Corsair springs to mind as it has RAM, coolers, and peripherals, but this is PC building we’re talking about! It feels antithetical to the platform to not be able to mix and match components!

My recommendation is to start with whatever app controls your motherboard, so in my case, Gigabyte RGB Fusion 2.0, and see what that can control. Chances are it will sync up the items inside your case for a more uniform look.

Ethereum ends mining, EVGA exits GPU market
THE PC LANDSCAPE IS ABOUT TO see the biggest upheaval in years. AMD Zen 4 CPUs, Intel Raptor Lake, Nvidia Ada Lovelace, and AMD RDNA 3 are all here or coming soon. But perhaps just as big and impactful on the PC enthusiast community is the successful transition of Ethereum from proof of work mining to proof of stake minting—the very next day, EVGA announced that it would be closing down its graphics card division.

Nvidia’s Lovelace letdown
IT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE this way. 2022 had all the makings of a stellar year for PC graphics, so good it would make up for the pandemic- and cr ypto-fueled bubble. Alas, Nvidia has kicked off the latest round of GPU launches with the RTX 40 Series, other wise known as Lovelace. And it’s a crushing disappointment. It’s also worr ying for AMD’s upcoming GPUs.
