CHRIS LEIGH has a timely warning for anyone with a permanent layout in a bespoke location which, perhaps, does not receive as much attention as it should.
Skylights above Chris’ mezzanine layout provide natural light, but he now has to cover the station with bin liners

My railway modelling ‘career’ (or hobby – call it what you will) extends back over 60 years. In that time I’ve built, or helped to build, layouts in most of the ‘recommended’ locations. Most of them have hazards. For instance, my first involvement in a club layout was a portable layout in sections, which various members took home in cars after each club meeting. On a dark, windy evening, a baseboard was left leaning against a car while the owner unlocked it. The baseboard blew over, flat on its face, crushing a couple of buildings.
