SABRINA, a veterinarian working as an intern at a veterinary hospital in New York City, got home from work one night at 10:30, not an unusual time for her. It was yet another week when she would spend more than 100 hours on the job. She was exhausted and ready to fall into bed. But just as she was putting her bags down, the phone rang. It was the hospital calling her back in for another overnight shift.
