A Sheriff was left horriThed after a drink driver from Oban tried to outrun the police. Peter Smith, of 11 Hazeldean Crescent, Oban, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. When detained, the 39-year-old had 53 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 22mg in 100ml. The incident occurred on May 19 this year and Smith was sentenced at Oban Sheriff Court on Tuesday August 14, where Sheriff Patrick Hughes disqualiThed Smith from driving for 18 months and ordered him to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.
Procurator fiscal Eoin McGinty said Smith refused to stop his van on Craigard Road when police off cers put on their blue lights. He sped up and drove around the police car.
The police pursued Smith with lights and sirens down Ardconnel Road in ‘close proximity to pedestrians, narrowly missing them’.
