MCCAIG’S Tower remains unfinished in spite of the best efforts of its designer John Stuart McCaig who started the project in order to create work for out-ofwork craftsmen in the late 19th century. By all account
Mr McCaig sits somewhere between philanthropist and self promotions, putting £50,000 of his own money into the project.
The structure sits proudly on Battery Hill with a commanding view over the islands. Woe betide anyone who calls this structure a ‘folly’ for this is a project that the people of Oban took to their hearts due to work created for townsfolk.
