The Strait of Magellan is at the tip of South America, separating mainland Chile in the north with Tierra del Fuego in the south. It’s a stretch of water famed for its changeable conditions, strong winds and high waves.
On 29 November, Michelle Macy set a new record for the fastest female crossing in 58 minutes and 13 seconds. Lynne Cox was the first person to swim the Strait of Magellan (1 hour 2 minutes) in 1976 and her female record had stood for 41 years. Gustavo Oriozabala from Argentina holds the record for fastest swim with his 2001 crossing in 51 minutes and 11 seconds.
Also in the water was Madhu Nagaraja, who became the first Canadian to swim across the Strait of Magellan. Nagaraja completed the 3.9km swim in waters as low as 4C in 1 hour 19 mins.
