At any time of year reedmace (Typha latifolia) offer food. A contrast to most plants whose bounty is limited by seasons. Autumn is the perfect time to get to know this edible plant. In this season leaves are topped by distinctive seed heads. There is nothing else that looks like 5 foot tall grass topped with fat sausages on sticks except its closely related and equally edible relative lesser reedmace (Typha angustifolia). In autumn as plants hunker down for winter dormancy, many of them pack their underground parts with the products of summer sunlight. Reedmace fill their rhizomes with starch and they are delicious roasted. But be prepared for messy work to get them.
