CAR OF THE YEAR 2015

We know we say it every year but choosing what cars should go in Car of the Year really sucks. In fact, it’s probably the thing we look forward to the least out of all the things we have to do for the already-a-pain-in-the-neck-December-issue every year. And with the standards of cars getting better and better, every year it gets harder to whittle them all down to just 28 choice picks. There are always so many cars left over that we want to include on the short list that we all end up feeling really guilty! But that said, we always get there in the end. So here they are, the 28 best cars of 2015! Which are your favourites? Don’t just think it to yourself, tell us! Email pvw@unitymedia.com with your three choices split in to first, second or third places (don’t just vote for the same car three times, that doesn’t work and we end up laughing at you…) or better yet, visit www.performancevwmag.com/coty2015 where you can vote in seconds. We’ll announce the results in the February issue – go!

JANUARY | MIKE LOVE | MK3 JETTA RWD TT (USA)

A twin-turbo, longitudinally-mounted VR6 with a spec list to kill for in a Mk3 Jetta? Awesome, right? What about if it drove the rear wheels through a mixture of custom fabbed parts and BMW chassis pieces? And the whole thing was finished to a level that would clean up on any showfield going? Mike Love’s Mk3 Jetta is just that! It’s not hard to see why Mike’s car had our jaws hanging wide open when we first saw photos of it pop up online!

JANUARY | RUUD JANSSEN | FRIDOLIN W12 (NL)

Where do we start with Ruud’s car? It’s quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, and it’s not just us who were blown away, the car has appeared on more blogs and in more magazines than we care to mention since it was finally finished in 2014. A Touareg 6.0-litre W12 mounted in the rear of the old typ147 Fridolin was just the start of the incredible things about this car, it’s an engineering masterpiece from top to bottom.

JANUARY | JORG BALLERMANN | MK1 GOLF 16v (DE)

Back in 2005 we featured Jorg’s Mk1 and even then it was one of the best Mk1s in the world. He told us he had no more plans for the Mk1 but that clearly didn’t work out! From 2010 Jorg revamped his Mk1 from top to bottom and took it to a level we’ve never seen before, with more chrome, more smoothing, more detailing… the list goes on and on. It’s one of the best Mk1s ever, period.
