AIS has been around for over a decade now, and has found a loyal following on boats small and large. While initially high costs meant most leisure boats went for receive-only AIS units, have a look at a display on a busy day and you’ll see that as transponders have come down in price, more and more leisure boats have installed them. However, while AIS is a useful tool for sailing among ships and other vessels, it’s not quite the panacea that some believe it to be.
