Grant boosts ‘Joem’ overhaul
THE North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) has secured a grant of £124,000 from the Cultural Assets Fund (CAF) which is administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) for boiler repairs to ‘J72’ 0-6-0T No. 69023. The funding recognises the locomotive’s regional and national importance and will ensure that it will be able to steam again and be available for the 200th Anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 2025. Affectionately known as ‘Joem’, the 1951-built loco last steamed in 2017 and was subsequently withdrawn due to the poor condition of its boiler. The main boiler repair contract has been awarded to Northern Steam Engineering Ltd on Teesside and the mechanical restoration is being undertaken by volunteers in the NELPG workshops in Hopetown, Darlington.
Former manager dies

New facilities on track
THE construction of a new home for The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust (A1SLT) – referred to as ‘Darlington Locomotive Works 2’ – reached a milestone on October 10, when the first lengths of rail arrived on site. By summer 2023, it is hoped to have in place a brand-new, purpose-built locomotive works within the Darlington Railway Heritage Quarter. The A1SLT has committed to sourcing and installing the 2km (1.24 miles) of track and points which will comprise the new private siding. It is asking well-wishers to join ‘The P-Way Gang’ with a target of raising £75,000 for track materials – which will help to pay for the running line, allowing movement around the site and live steam rides. The site will also include a main line rail connection, running track, inspection pits and more. Visit www.a1steam.com
