Against the backdrop of Greek austerity, the question remains as to how Greece intends to continue to compete on the international stage.
At the 2015 World Rowing Championships, Greece finished 14th in the medal table, having achieved second place in the women’s heavyweight double. It’s a definite consolation after six years of trouble, but Ioannis Karras, President of the Greek Rowing Federation, remains unsatisfied. “I believe we didn’t perform as well as we could have,” admits Karras, who has played a key role in maintaining the sport within Greece. “Two of our crews performed a little worse than our expectations. The LM2x got so close to winning a ticket for Rio, but just missed out”.
