Jamie McKelvie on bringing Captain Carter up to date in a new Marvel series
→ STEMMING FROM an idea to create an Excalibur-style team book that’s part of the Captain America line rather than the X-Men, Captain Carter, a new miniseries by writer Jamie McKelvie and artist Marika Cresta, will see Peggy Carter propelled into the modern-day Marvel universe.
“It just struck me that there was a currently unexplored space there for something taking place in Britain at the point we’re at right now,” McKelvie tells Red Alert. “I love a lot of Marvel’s British characters, but historically many of them are seen through a lens of kings and queens and castles, and magic. Captain America is a working class kid from Queens, while Captain Britain is basically landed gentry. I understand why, as the fairy tale aspect is appealing as viewed from across the pond, but it doesn’t relate to the Britain I or most people know.”
