The 2009 National Academy of Science report Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward first brought to public attention the serious problems with the forensic sciences. Now, well over ten years later, the state of forensic science in the United States still leaves much to be desired. Brandon L. Garrett, a law professor at Duke University and active investigator of the problems with forensic science, has written an important book examining the current state of forensic science and ways to improve it. It is well written and extensively referenced. In addition to discussing the data on various discredited forensic techniques—which, sadly, are often still used—the book describes specific cases where such techniques have led to innocent individuals being imprisoned for lengthy periods or even executed.
