PUTIN THE TERRIBLE: THE RISE OF A RUSSIAN AUTOCRAT
Vladimir Putin’s victory in Russia’s presidential election on Sunday “was never in any doubt”, said The Economist. All viable challengers, such as anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny, had been prevented from running. The Kremlin, concerned about low turnout, “resorted to bread and circuses”, offering music, entertainment and food at polling stations. There were some reports of ballot stuffing, but such blatant fraud was largely unnecessary. Putin, who remains genuinely popular, racked up over 76% of the vote on a turnout of 67%. His nearest rival, the Communist Party’s Pavel Grudinin, won 12%. President Putin will take his victory “as a mandate to continue his current course, one defined in large part by confrontation with the West”.
