Were you to visit a certain university in Singapore, you might be greeted by a receptionist named Nadine. But if you felt there was something a bit odd about Nadine, you’d be right, for Nadine is no ordinary receptionist: she’s one of a new generation of androids. Created at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, she can not only make conversation, she can display emotions. She needs refining, but her creators think that robots like Nadine will soon be capable of caring for the elderly, or working in an office, and will eventually be as sophisticated as Star Wars’s C-3PO.
