No 1 debut, with The Monkees sharing out lead vocals on songs written by David Gates and Goffin/King. Mike Nesmith wrote “Papa Gene’s Blues”, co-wrote “Sweet Young Thing” and encouraged Peter Tork to perform on two songs he co-produced. Highlights include Gates’ “Saturday’s Child” and the classic theme song. 8/10

COLGEMS, 1967
Another No 1 thanks to Neil Diamond’s chart-topper “I’m A Believer” and a repeat of the debut, with The Monkees adding vocals to songs by Diamond, Goffin/King and Boyce/Hart. “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)” is another Diamond belter, Dolenz is on great form for “The Kind Of Girl I Could Love”, while Boyce/Hart’s “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” is an enduring gem. 9/10
