(DO GO BACK TO) ROCKVILLE
Thank you for the article on R.E.M. What a band they were. I saw them two or three times in the summer of 1985, including the open-air gig at Milton Keynes. The Ramones played that one as well.
But the best gig was the one they played at Warwick University as part of a summer ball. The evening started with Jonathan Richman. The bands were playing in a room where a few weeks previously I had been busy failing various law exams. It had a low ceiling and Michael Stipe could almost touch it standing on the stage. The audience was full of people I had told to go see this strange American band who played this exultant, elliptical rock music. At that time they sounded like the best band in the world.
