Kurt Wagner’s appetite for change hasn’t dwindled, and Lambchop’s succinct 16th is, thanks to his MIDI piano experiments, particularly tempting. The acoustic guitars of “Impossible Meatballs” will feel familiar and Wagner’s vocals are, compared with recent excursions, largely untreated – although computerised warbles top “Unknown Man” and “Blue Leo” – but Showtunes’ abstract qualities are startling. Justin Vernon’s sampling digressions are recalled in the hypnagogic snatches of opera that decorate “The Last Benedict”, while yMusic’s CJ Camerieri adds unconventional brass fanfares to the amorphic “Drop C” and slippery, prismatic “Fuku”, on which the upright bass of Yo La Tengo’s James McNew provides additional subtle architecture.
