Stag beetles are one of the UK’s largest and rarest beetles. They are recognisable due to male’s large mandibles that are similar to the antlers of a stag. The mandibles are used in courtship displays and for wrestling with other males. Stag beetles can also be known as horse pinchers, thunder beetles or oak ox and are often confused for another species of beetle, the lesser stag beetle.
