CAUBY PEIXOTO
Rock’N’Roll
Em
Copacabana/
Amor
Verdadeiro
1957 (RCA Victor)
The earliest entry on this list, this excellent Brazilian single shows just how far and how fast American rock’n’roll cast its influence. Cited as one of the first, if not the first , original rock’n’roll number to come out of that country, Rock’N’Roll Em Copacabana was penned by journalist, jingle writer and disc jockey Miguel Gustavo, who would later, among other achievements, compose the theme for the 1970 Mexico World Cup. Singer Cauby Peixoto, known for his trademark deep vocals and flamboyant dress, performs admirably on this jumping, bossa-nova-tinged cut.
